I’ve been giving a lot of tours this summer. With every tour I do, I feel more confident for the next one. Some tours are for five families at once and some are for 10 year old children, but no two tours are the same.
Besides my experience with tours, I feel I should give some advice about tours. Here is some advice for students going on tours at Saint Francis or whatever college they are looking into.
1) Call ahead. Call the college you want to visit to set up a day someone can give you a tour. The college might have a special event to give information, or the office may be closed on the day you want to come. The front desk person should be really nice people!
2) Find the college website. Look around on the college website for information about your area of interest, the campus map, how to get there, parking, and other random facts about the university. This will give you ideas for questions to ask. This brings me to my next point. (Here is our website)
3) Have questions. Personally, I love students who asks a ton of questions. It shows me the students care about their future. Think of what is important to you and your college experience. Clubs? Residence? Academics? City Life?
What questions should you ask? If you are looking at multiple colleges, which you should be doing, you should ask similar questions. This way it is easier to compare all the college you are interested in.
4) Talk with counselors. Before or after your tour, make an appointment with an admission council or financial aid person. These people have knowledge about their college the tour guide doesn’t know and vice versa. If there are question your tour guide could not answer, a counselor would be able to answer it.
